Radio Protection

By radioprotection, we think of the protection of the population from the influences of radiation.
This involves both protection from accidental radiation and from radiation during the exercise of the profession. Obviously, I am going to speak here primarily about radiation generated in the radiology department.

Here there are two groups that need to be protected from radiation. First, the X-ray technician who thus takes the picture and, second, the patient whose picture is taken.

Before discussing the legal standards, I would like to go over the basics, which one must observe at all times.
When taking a photograph, the first thing one thinks about is the amount of radiation one is going to use, and tries to keep it as low as possible. There is often talk about the ALARA principle in that regard, which stands for As Low As Reasonably Achievable. So keep the dose as low as possible in order to get the best quality photo possible. But it’s not just the photograph itself that produces radiation. The use of scopy is also harmful. So it is not going to be used to position the patient as optimally as possible. Scopy is useful for checking position, but it is not the means to that end.

In addition to the patient, the X-ray technician is also in the room and must also be protected. Always stand behind the lead screen unless there is really no other way. If your presence next to the patient is necessary, always use the necessary protective equipment. I.e. : a lead apron, thyroid protection and if your hands come into the radiation field, also lead gloves. The use of lead goggles may also be a necessity during prolonged examinations.

Of course, as a radiology staff member, you always wear your dosimeter. This is not a direct protective device, but it is a way of checking whether or not you have been in contact with radiation and to what extent.
